I've just downloaded the DC8-50 base pack and followed the installation instructions and I can't find it anywhere in FS9. If I can't find it I can't install panels or other liveries. Can anyone tell me where to look? I have, in the past, tried to download and install other HJG aircraft and have had the same problem.

Seems like you have done the exact smae errors all the time  It shouldn't be long before one of the guys come along and set you right ... meanwhile you might want to look at Mark's excellent guides on installing in FS9 .... they are very thorough and available at this forum. Be sure to follow each step as described. |

Thanks for the quick reply. Who's Mark and where do I find his guides? Also, the instructions given for installing base packs are very simple: "unzip the base packs to the FS9 aircraft folder." That's what I've done and nothing shows so if you can get me to Mark's guides I would appreciate it. Again, thanks for your reply.

You need to install one or more texture sets (instructions are provided within the downloads) after the base pack, before you can see your new aircraft in FS9/FSX.

Hello George, thanks for your reply but unfortunately it doesn't help. I have found that after unzipping the file as per instructions, all I can find in the aircraft folder of FS9 is an icon for an installer that does not work and one or two of the other files that are in the downloaded zip file. Nothing shows up as an aircraft folder of any description to where I can install a texture folder let alone amend the config file. I would appreciate any help that anyone can give. Thanks

OK revkev here is my suggestion on how to solve your problem.
For some reason when you extract the HJG DC-8-50 base pack it does not have its own folder, but extracts to give you seperate folders ie. Model, Panel, Sound, the Air file and aircraft cfg.
What you need to do is to create your own Folder and place it in FS9 Aircraft folder and then re name it HJG Douglas DC-8-50.
Now proceed and copy and paste all the individual folders that you have unzipped into the DC-8-50 folder.
This procedure only seems to apply to some DC-8's. Most of the other HJG aircraft when the base pack is unzipped it has all the sererate folders already in one folder.
Give that a try and let us know how you make out.
Also be carefull when you add the textures as there is a folder inside the first folder after unzipping and it is this second folder that you need to copy and paste into the aircraft folder.
Also the file named "installer" is actually the aircraft "airfile" which you should not mess around with.

Hello Herman and George, Many thanks for both of your suggestions as I now have the DC8-50 showing up in the aircraft list under "Douglas." So I then went and downloaded the panel and followed all of the instructions for installation as listed on P4 of the forum entry regarding the panel installation. I ran into the same problems as mentioned and then used the entries to correct the problems and, lo and behold, the DC8 panel shows up. There's only one slight problem: there are no instruments in the panel. What do I do now? I might post this question into that thread and see what response is forthcoming. But, for the immediate problems, thanks very much to both of you for your help.

You've obviously installed the panel file/s .... but .... not the essential "Panel Gauges/Core Files package which is available from the top of the DC9 Panel downloads page .... and each of our other aircraft type panel downloads pages.
These are the files Dan was referring to when he mentioned "basepack".

To make a long story short, what I was trying to explain to revkev above is this.
Most HJG aircraft when the base packs are unzipped will produce a "base pack" folder containing all the individual component folders.
Most of the the DC-8's...from what I recall...when the base pack is unzipped do not create a "base pack " folder. One, therefore has to be produced by the individual wishing to use the aircraft, who is then required to place all the individual components into this base pack folder.
Would it be possible to incorporate this into the installation instructions or change the set up to the same as all the other HJG aircraft so that after unzipping, a "base pack" folder will automatically be created.

If that's the case (I wouldn't know personally since I've never downloaded a single DC8 base pack since the old HJG administration first released them .... opting instead to just replace the contents of my existing base packs with new data as it became available. Nor did I prepare any of the currently downloadable DC8 base packs either) .... then how that came to be I can't say .... but .... however it came be be will have been the case since April 2006. If anythin needsd addressing then likely won't be addressed until I can get the revised DC8 FDE uploaded .... which I'm always talking about .... but which a succession of new projects (B727, CARAVELLE, DC9, and L1011) has constantly literally forced me to shelve as we prioritized these other more recent new projects. If I may digress to say so also .... "THIS" is the same reason why the KC135 panel project .... which I've also been talking about for so long too .... has also been so constantly deferred too. SORRY .... but ... that's the best I can offer for the moment .... and whatever needs being done, if anything needs being done at all, will have to await personal convenience. At the end of the day "WE" have to assume that most end users have sufficient knowledge of FS structure to recognize an issue/a discrepancy where one arrises .... like this apparent DC8 base pack issue .... and then know precisely what to do in order to rectify it. If folk unzip everything to a temporary folder, outside of FS (recommended), then such discrepancies will be much more easily recognized and rectified rather than having/ending up with a basically "exploded" (aircraft folder .... with bits'n'pieces everywhere inside the main FMSFS Aircraft folder) .... if they were to unzip folders directly to their main FS folder directories. In addition to all above I can tell you that I had the same problem and it wasn't resolved by the above method. I have a very funny problem. After some try and error it turned out that when the first aircraft to be installed in the DC8-50 list was the KLM 1968 livery[i.e. as fltsim=0], the whole aircraft series DC8-50 doesn't show up in the aircraft list. However when installing another repaint as the first one, for example the ALM livery on top[fltsim=0] the problem disappeared, and it shows up in the aircraft list of FS 9 and all the other installed liveries as well.
No idea why this is but it might be of help to fellow simmers having the same problem.

When any of our aircraft do not appear within the MSFS Aircraft Selection Menu .... then 99% of the time it's usually because the required ADD TO AIRCRAFT/ texture CFG edits have no been applied correctly.

I am having this same problem with the L1011 and the DC9. I have followed every single step to a T as listed in the instructions. In fact I have reinstalled both aircraft 5 or 6 times each. They will not show up in FS9. I had no problem at all installing your B707 or B727. I use those almost daily. It seems the problem shows up with planes that are for FS9 as well as FSX. I have given up on the L1011 and DC9. No matter how many times I reread the instructions and reinstall they just won't show up in FS9. And please Aerofoto don't ell me I haven't done the proper CFG edits because I have done everything as per the instructions over and over again. It's too bad because I really wanted to use those aircraft.

WELL .... I can't see what you've done .... SO .... if you need/want help then let's not start off on the wrong foot here please ....  In any case .... people often "think" they've followed instructions to the letter .... but .... more often than not .... the truth is they "haven't"  The simple facts are .... (a) "9 times out of 10 times" the reason why something doesn't display in FS is simply because it's not been installed correctly for starters .... (b) "IF" everything "IS" installed "CORRECTLY" then it "WILL", always, display and work fine within FS .... and (c) "IF" the product/s HJG offer were faulty and didn't then there would be "A FORUM FULL OF COMPLAINTS" relating to the same/similar issue in regat to that particular product .... and people do, and "WILL", complain I can assure you. There could be "any number of reasons" for your experience .... ranging from valid files still, however inadvertently, being contained inside other containers/folders from the original ZIP file .... to ADD TO AIRCRAFT data that's not been correctly applied correctly .... to aircraft textures being applied to the wrong aircraft base pack models .... to errors within CFG data associated with Panel and Sound folders which can throw everything out of whack. Again .... there's a multitude of possibilities that can result in an "FS NO SHOW".  NOW THEN .... if you're FS9/2004 .... then I maybe I can help you. If your FSX .... then I probably can't assist, but, I won't resign myself to that possibility until I see "more information" .... from you .... "as to precisely what you've done". THEREFORE .... "IF" you feel you have an issue to be resolved .... then I want you to copy and paste .... right here on this particular thread .... the ADD TO AIRCRAFT/FLTSIM.XX data (only) from your AIRCRAFT.CFG (not the entire CFG please) for each aircraft, you say, won't display in FS. "IF" you'll also additionally support that posting with an image .... showing the entire contents of the aircraft base pack for the aircraft subject/s, you, say, won't display .... then that'll help too. I also suggest we take 1 aircraft installation at a time. Over to you now ! Mark C AKL/NZ |
