Interestingly, on the third link, the 1975 Air Viliking, the aeroplane has the fin top tube or aerial missing.

Actually Garry, there were several airlines that did do away with the fin aerial on their 707 and 720 aircraft, American AL and United AL were two of them. The Air Viking 720 definitely is an ex United airplane.

That's the VHF antennae .... that tail probe ! As Herman mentions .... not all B720's featured it. In particular .... it was primarily those aircraft which were configured to serve US domestic routes and which didn't require the overflying of large stretches of ocean/water that never featured this antennae/probe .... such as the entire UNITED B720 fleet, and some (only) of the AMERICAN B720 and B720-B fleet. There were also a few (very few though) B707-120B's .... like some of those aircraft operated by TWA .... which were configured for domestic routes only and similarly lacked the classic B707/720 TYPE tail mounted VHF antennae/probe too. We/HJG do have 3D models representing each of these B707-120B, B720, and B720B configurations .... as follows .... B707-120B TWAB720 UNITED AIRLINESB720-B AMERICAN AIRLINESDan .... if you can sort out the "AIR VIKING" titles (decent size, good quality, clear references), then I may be able to get the earlier AIR VIKING B720-020 livery represented for you .... since it basically represents a simple redevelopment of the existing UNITED texture we currently host for this aircraft type.
That 2nd variation of AIR VIKING livery is a bit more complex though and would need to be customized .... probably by someone else Mark C AKL/NZ

DEFINITELY .... considering most of B720 and B720-B aircraft were built with the VHF tail probe .... as per these babies .... EASTERN B720-020AVIANCA COLOMBIA B720-BWhilst on the subject of B720 aircraft .... The the original aircraft design .... as evidenced by the very first 3 (only) production aircraft .... featured the classic short tail fin of the early B707-120, -138, -220, -320, and -420. After the 1959 accident which occurred to a BRANIFF B707-220 during a test/training flight, the tail height was increased and a lower rear fuselage ventral fin added in order to improve the lateral stability of these aircraft (actually a British CAA directive). These modifications (the tall tail inparticular) then became standard features of all new-build B707/720 aircraft from 1960 .... as well as being retro-fitted to all airframes produced prior to 1960 also. The lower rear fuselage ventral fin was dispended with from these aircraft from B707-320B ADVC production onwards. Here's the short tail B720 .... which test flew with this particular configuration and in UNITED livery, but, never actually entered revenue service with the airline until after the tail and ventral fin modifications/directives were applied .... B720 UNITED AIRLINES (original short tail)At least 1 B720-020 was operated as a freighter .... B720 (F) BELIZE AIRWAYS CARGO.... as was at least 1 B720-B aircraft as well .... B720-B(F) AEROVIAS ECUATORIANA CARGOThere's quite a bit more to these birds than actually meets the eye. Certainly more than most folk probably realize. Mark C AKL/NZ
