In Windows Explorer, right click on the file and select 'Properties'. A dialog box will open up with a checkbox near the bottom for 'Read Only'. Uncheck that checkbox, click on OK and then you can edit.

Jim

It might be even quicker and easier to use notepad as your editor for such simple text files ...

Thank you for the replies , sadly I am still in the same predicament .read only is unchecked . I have downloaded five HJG airliners all the panel cfg files I opened to change the MS word Alias file " were not read only" The only Base panel file to down load read only is the DC 8-73 I down loaded it again this evening ,its still read only . I don't have a clue how to use notepad to edit this file in the aircraft file in FS 2004. I am left asking myself why are the same files in the other aircraft "not read only" Its times like this when I wish I was more PC literate
Regards, Richard

I did ask, yesterday, that this file be checked .... along with that for the DC8-73F version too .... BUT .... was more-or-less assured that wasn't necessary. Richard .... have you followed Jim HALINDA's instructions .... because this READ ONLY attribute is/should be a very simple "undo" on the basis of what he's stated .... and which I'll repeat for you as follows .... 1. Right mouse click on the actual CFG file in question. 2. Select "PROPERTIES" from the dialogue box that appears .... it should be the last item in the list. 3. Then simply mouse click on the "READ ONLY" box .... to uncheck the Read Only attribute. 4. Then select "OK". You will should then be able to edit that CFG file to your hearts content These details are true of WINDOWS XP PRO. Mark C AKL/NZ

Richard I have looked at some of these files and they are read only, as its a big time consuming task to change all the files required and as it does not seem to be a universal problem, I suggest that you follow the guys advice and edit them as you need, maybe when time permits we can re look at them in the future. Many thanks Tony

Hi: Think the question is more simple and fundamental:
The panel.cfg file with the alias to the panel stored in fsconserv should not be a word-file, it must be a notepad file. If its not notepad FS cannot read it. Therefore the easiest solution: Open the panel-config with notepad and change it there accordingly may be past copy and paste of the required new text lines or typing it EXACTLY as it should be. You don't need at all WORD.
Or if you want the DC8 73 INS panel: delete everything in the panel.cfg file (not in the panel-download, in the panel-folder inside the AIRCRAFT-DOWNLOAD).
[fltsim] alias=B737_400\panel
Copy and paste that:
[fltsim] alias=fsfsconv\panel.DC8-72_73_INS
You can copy it from here. Or open the fext-file which comes with the PANEL-Download. This is text-file (notepad) and it should open by itself if you click on it.
Kind regards Walter

Don't worry about it Walter We've established that there "IS" indeed a "READ ONLY" CFG issue to be reconciled within most, if not all of, the DC8 base packs. The issue is precisely as follows .... All DC8 AIRCRAFT.CFG files are OK .... but .... each of the default DC8 PANEL.CFG and the default DC8 SOUND.CFG files inside their respective default base pack folders are indeed "READ ONLY". I didn't compile these particular base pack files and it seems they've been like this since around December 2007 .... when they were last updated. I'm actually surprised nobody has drawn this to our attention sooner than now ;D The DC8 base pack SOUND.CFG "READ ONLY" issue isn't a major one .... since most folk will use either default MSFS aliased audio or replace their SOUND folders completely with our custom AEROMUSICA DC8 soundpacks, but, if folk are installing the HJG custom DC8 panels .... "as per the installation instructions accopanying each panel download" .... then they will run imto a PANEL.CFG editng problem if they don't know how to uncheck this inadvetrtent PANEL.CFG "READ ONLY" attribute .... and lets's face it .... some folk, genuinely, don't know how to do this ! I don't know how soon we might be able to provide a permanent fix .... BUT .... the instructions provided (above) by both Jim HALINDA, an myself, should be sufficient to help even the most unskilled PC user resolve this sort of issue .... until the permanent fix is applied. I will also add these same instructions to a "KNOWN ISSUES" chapter within my DC8 PANEL INSTALLATION & HANDLING NOTES posting on the ABOUT HJG AIRCRAFT forum page. Mark C AKL/NZ

Hi Mark: Now I remember that I threw away the entire panel folder and used one of another plane with no read only restriction, brutal but effective. Walter
