Could anyone kindly help me with a problem I have just started using Windows 7 for flight simulator 2004 since my Windows XP computer was no longer able to be repaired. When I go to to update the Aircraft Config on Windows 7 it is showing up I need to file to open the Aircraft Config file. I never had any problems adding in Windows XP but its now only with Windows 7. I would be very glad of any kind assistance.

You wouldn´t talking about ADMINISTRTATOR RIGHTS over your own PC/WINDOWS 7 installation .... by any chance .... would you ? The only 2 conditions which, I know of, that might prevent one adding data to/editing an AIRCRAFT.CFG file are .... (a) if the Administrator Rights" over ones WINDOWS 7 installation hasn´t been set up correctly, or, at all (I understand that is quite common of WINDOWS 7, but, not being a user of this particular OS I´m not sure how to address the problem) .... or (b) if the CFG file you´re trying to edit has, for whatever reason, defaulted to "Read Only" attribute. In the case of "A" (administraor right) .... I think Dan has discussed how to address this particular issue within his, superb; FSX installation tutorial notes .... on the FSX SUPPORT forum page. The CFG files are supposed to open up in NOTEPAD form .... at least they do on each of the PC´s I use.
If your problem (not being able to edit AIRCRAFT.CFG files .... as I understand is the case) is being caused by a CFG file with its READ ONLY attribute activated then the solution is quite simple and straight-forward as follows ....
- Right click on the CFG file in question.
- select "PROPERTIES" fron the dialogue box that opens .... "PROPERTIES will normally appear as the last item on the list inside this dialogue box.
- Then ensure that the "READ ONLY" option within this new "PROPERTIES" (only) dialogue box appears un-checked .... unckeck it if necessary and then save this edit by selecting "OK"
This action will normally, then, be sufficient to allow one to add data to/edit the CFG file in the future.
Since you´re using WINDOWS 7, and by implication are probably new to it, then I suspect the above advice probably won´t resolve your problem and that you´ll, instead, possibly need to set up "ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS" over your new operating system in order to be able to edit CFG files. I understand this may be common of WINDOWS 7 .... I´ve seen it happen myself .... but .... as mentioned within my first posting (above), I´m not a WINDOWS 7 user, and therefore, aren´t able to advise how to address this particular issue, however, and as also stated in my above reply posting, I believe Dan does cover the setting up of ADMINISTRATOR RIGHTS within one, or other, of his FSX INSTALLATION TUTORIALS .... which appear on the FSX SUPPORT forum page .... so .... the answer should be there .... short of someone else reading "THIS" and posting precise instructions for you to follow accordingly.
I´m pretty sure either one of the 2 possibilities is maybe what´s actually causing your problem.

Hi: The file is "aircraft.cfg" its in the base pack under "aircraft" and the name of the aircraft. Most repaints don't contain this file mostly they have a file with that part you have to put into the aircraft.cfg. If you try to open it with a left click some WIN7 installations try to open it with WORD don't do that. Use the option "open it with a program" and choose NOTEPAD. Save the original one and put in the new lines, take care of the numbering, don't forget to save. The administrators rights are well explained above as in WIN7 there are more internal safeguards as in XP. Walter
