Ok guys, I've been gone a bit, why is Delta getting Air Trans B-717s? To be accurate, Delta is getting 717s from Southwest, not Air Trans. Southwest now owns those 717s from purchase of Air Tran. Delta inherited huge fleet of 40 year old GAS GUZZLING DC-9s from Northwest airline via merger and in order to maintain same DC-9 routes while getting rid of outdated DC-9s, 717s would be perfect and fast solution to this problem especially no need for long waiting for new planes to be manufactured at factories and deliveries. Plus Southwest is not too keen to keep 717s that they got from Air Trans. Also, 717s would be useful for Delta to maintain low destiny BUT vital routes. And 717s have best maintenance record of all airline planes. Plus 717s are renowned for fast maintenance turnover. Easy to do maintenance on 717s. Aharon

Aharon just about sums it up. Southwest didn't want our airplanes, so they found a way to work subleases through Boeing to Delta (Airtran leases the airplanes). I'm not privy to all the details, but I suspect the deal involved 737 MAXs or NGs for Southwest, Delta getting some money, Southwest getting some money, and Boeing not being stuck with almost 90 717s that nobody wanted. Delta has stated they will use the airplanes to replace some 70-seat jet flying.
Delta's 717s start revenue flying next month. I don't know how many they have, but the word we're hearing is that the airplanes will leave the Airtran fleet starting late Summer, with DAL taking approximately 2 1/2 per month. Airtran will likely still have almost 30 of the 717s left when the pilot integration is complete on January 1, 2015, quite the bone of contention for the SWA pilots. Unfortunately, there's just no way to get all of us transitioned before that date. SWA waited too long.
While the 717s had their share of problems, most Airtran employees are fond of them. It was the right airplane at the right time, and allowed Airtran to become a major player in the domestic and international passenger markets when the bottom fell out after 9/11. They flew every route in the system until the 737s came along, from the quick Atlanta to Charlotte and Savannah runs, to the long drags from Fort Lauderdale to Minneapolis, or Dallas to Baltimore. For passengers they're quiet, comfortable, and reliable. For pilots they're stable, powerful, well-engineered. All of our flight attendants like them better than the 737s.
We're sorry to see them--and our airline--go. But they're going to a great home. I wish them the best.
Al

Thanks Aahron and Al. Appreciate the update. It is always sad to see a good business being taken over by a larger company. I had enough exposure to that in the past. Falcon

Just got a glimpse of the reg number and livery on the real thing. I will wrap this up and send it off shortly. Made her quite a bit "newer" looking with a bit more shine and the panel lines subdued slightly with all that nice new white paint.
