It was founded as KITTY HAWK AIRWAYS during 1976 and based at Dalas-Fort Worth, and Grapevine Texas, with a hub at Fort Wayne .... flying B727 and CV640 aircraft.
There is a KITTY HAWK/AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL/KALIOTTA AIR connection which runs "something like" this ....
What became AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AIRWAYS in 1984 .... was the outgrowth of an air transport service founded by racing car driver/drag racer Conrad "Connie" KALITTA during 1967 .... to airfreight car parts.
From the mid 1980's AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL operated B747-100/100F, 200F, B727-100F/200F, BEECH, DC8-50F/61F/62F/63F, DC9-F, and LEARJET .... later including the L1011-200/200F as well .... on freight (including military), air ambulance, and PAX charter services.
In the case of KITTY HAWK AIRWAYS .... by the 1990's this had become KITTY HAWK INTERNATIONAL who's operations were merged with those AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL during 1997 .... although its aircraft continued to support KITTY HAWK branding.
During April 2000 the KITTY HAWK operation was in financial difficulties and sought Chapter 11 protection.
Kalitta recued the operation and using the KITTY HAWK operating certificate to form a new company named KALITTA AIR .... which commenced operations during November 2000 although some aircraft may continue to have supported KITTY HAWK branding
The rest is "a little murky" .... but (as I understand things at least) .... seems to have unfolded as follows ....
From October 29th 2007 KITTY HAWK ceased all "scheduled" operations but continued operating cargo "charters" only.
It then began flying overnight freight operations for DHL from November 20th 2007 .... for 4 weeks only.
KITTY HAWK operated its final revenue flight on January 8th 2008 .... and its last ever flight on January th 2008.
Throughout its operation history KITTY HAWK operated a total of ....
- 18 B727-200F - 7 B737-300SF - 7 CV640 - 3 L1011-F
KITTY HAWK serviced the following uS domestic destinations ....
Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Buffalo, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas/Ft Worth, Dayton, Denver, Detroit, El Paso, Fort Wayne, Grand Rapids, Hartford, Honolulu, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Lexington, Las Vegas, Lexington, Los Angeles, Louisville, Memphis, Miami, Milwaukee, Minneapolis/St Paul, Nashville, New York, Newark, Norfolk, Omaha, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Raleigh, Richmond, St. Louis, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, South Bend, Tampa, and Washington, DC.
.... and the following internation destinations too ....
Anchorage, Honolulu, San Juan, and Toronto.
During the mid 1990's a KITTY HAWK AIR CARGO B727-200F (N6833) was based at Auckland, New Zealand, for a few months, and during which time it operated trans-Tasman cargo services to Sydney, Australia on behalf of ANSETT NEW ZEALAND .... or it might have been DHL .... I'm not sure.
JUST A REMINDER ....
Tony's painted 2 variations of KITTY HAWK livery for the B727-200F ADV .... bioth of which may be viewed on the HJG "PREVIEWS" forum page. These will be released as part of the next HJG website update
