Hi, I fly a lot at night and like the planes to be lit up like Christmas trees at the airports. So light maps are a big deal for me on AI aircraft.
Unfortunately the light maps on the 62 & 72 are not working for me.
On the 62 the cabin lights up only at the front part of the aircraft and only at a close distance. The 72 has identical issue with cabin lights as well as the logo light.
This happens with all the 62 & 72 textures.
Same result in in both FS2004 (XP) and FSX (Win7)
I tried the fuselage textures from the flyable model and had the same result. Which leads me be to believe that there might be a problem with the AI model or perhaps my installation.
Is anyone experiencing the same issue?

Bear in mind that very few DC8's were ever fitted with "tail logo lighting" .... if that's what youi're referring to.
In fact it didn't come into vogue until the early 1970's .... and by far the majority of DC8 operators simply didn't install it because these aircraft (along with B707's too) were on their way out of most major airline fleets by this time .... being replaced by narrow body B727's and wide body B747's, DC10's, and L1011's.
One DC8 operator that "DID" install tail logo lighting on its fleet was AIR NEW ZEALAND .... on it's DC8-52's (and which remained on these particular aircraft wherever they went after their AIR NEW ZEALAND service) .... but which aren't, yet, represented in AI form by HJG
"THIS" (for reasons of authenticity) .... could explain what, you say, you're seeing, or not seeing, as the case may be .... at least in regard to the apparent absence of tail logo lighting.

I'm pretty aware of the fact that logo lights were not really used in the early Jet age. Regardless of the logo light it's rather the cabin lights that is the main problem. link

During production the models were tested with one texture set at night, which worked correctly. The others were only tested during the day. The light map for the AI aircraft is the same as the UI aircraft so should work, so if there is an issue, it could well be with the original paint. You have already concluded this as you have said you have tried some and they did not work. Did they work on the UI aircraft? If they did work with the UI aircraft, tell me which texture set you were using and I'll investigate. As Mark has said, the tail should not be illuminated for 99% of DC-8s. Paul

Here's my test with the UI model using both UI & AI textures of the "dc-8-62_aeromexico_1987_62h_xa-amt". Top image are the AI textures and bottom are the UI textures.

Here's second test using the AI model with same textures. Hi bbb747. OK, from that it looks like the night alpha channel for some of the textures is not being turned on. I don't know how that can happen or what could cause it to happen, but it might be a simple fix. This data is added when you apply the texture to the part. I'll try re-initialising the fuselage textures day and night alpha channels and recompile the model. The 72 would be the same as its the exactly same fuselage. That is the only thing I can think of as it works on the UI model. Hopefully that will work, otherwise I'll have to break up and rebuild 8 fuselages per model and re-set the data for each fuselage section Give me a couple of hours to try this. Paul

Hi bbb747.
Nothing wrong with the model, all alpha tags in place, but only fuse 1 & 2 show up in the sim!
Removed all the tags, saved, exited FSDS. Opened FSDS, loaded and re-added the texture tags and recompiled the model, as it looks like a glitch with FSDS.
Seems OK in the sim again.
Try this MDL (just replace the existing DC-8-62 model), and hopefully it will work for you as well. If its working for you, I'll do the same for the 62F and 72 models and upload patches until the updates go on line.

Hi Paul, Looks like your fix worked. Got back my Christmas trees! If you're wondering about the logo lights on all the aircraft tail that's just me that did that. And may I add for sceptics, I had over 60 HJG AI aircraft (all of the the 62s) parked or taxing around that airport without any frame rate issues whatsoever. Thanks a lot Paul...

Glad that worked. I still don't have a clue why it stopped working. One of life's many mysteries. I'll fix the 62F and 72 and make the MDL's available for download. I'll also make sure from now on that I check the night alphas are still working when the models are released. As you can guess, my airports are full of unfinished lodless aircraft, and frame rate hit is less than one 737 using 32 bit textures! Paul
