David Maltby's models are freeware that gives payware something to shoot for. LOVE his work! To me its payware, because I have always supported the aircraft preservation charities associated with CBFSim, and do my bit to preserve our proud aviation history. Proud to be British (with a German Surname) Hail To England Ben

I think in so far as this type "PAYWARE" versus "FREEWARE" aspect of our hobby is concerned (which probably boils down to "SPONSORSHIP") there's probably no comparason .... really ! David's stuff remains "FREE" to whomever wants it and the "DONATION" aspect of things is purely voluntary of course. Some folks feel strongly motivated to want to make donations of their own free will .... and do so .... and good on them for doing that .... whilst others (and most certainly not to their detriment either) feel less inclined to want to do so. At the end of the day I'm sure whilst David appreciates such financial remuneration (who wouldn't) he doesn't really mind either way. If he did mind "BIG TIME" then I guess we'd all be downloading what we want from him for a nominal fee .... but even then .... I feel .... the quality of his products would still justify any such fee .... but .... that's just my personal oppinion of course. I think FS can be a good means by which to draw attention, support .... even funding for aircraft preservation projects like that of the TRIDENT and BAC 1-11. Cetainly I was never aware of the challenges confronted by these societies until I saw information posted about them on David's FS website. Additionally I feel it's good that you (Ben) obviously feel sufficiently strongly motivated to contribute your bit to these societies. I applaud anyone who does that. However great or small such contributions might be .... it all "HELPS" .... and at the end of the day it's the preservation of our world culture of aviation history (not just airline nostalgia alone) that's hopefully being protected. I often wish similar support could be drummed up here in New Zealand .... that might result in bringing home for preservation the ex AIR NEW ZEALAND DC8-52 slowly decaying in Manaus, Brasil (if she's not already been scrapped) after her service to TRANSPORTES CHARTRES do BRASIL .... old PP-TPC ex ZK-NZC Fortunately most British generally care about their aviation heritage. Unfortunately .... New Zealand is either too small to generate the required revenue to fund a project of such magnitud as DC8 preservation .... or .... the majority of folk "frankly my dears just don't give a darned" Sadly .... we New Zealander's can't compare ouselves with the Australian's whom recognised the value of and cared sufficiently for the future of their recently salvaged ex QANTAS B707-138B VH-XBA / ex VH-EBA .... saving her from what might otherwise have been scrapping/extinction .... and the loss of yet another piece of world aviation heritage. Maybe .... but .... there all in pieces .... or .... falling to pieces .... with the exception of at least 1 ex RNZAF aircraft which I believe has been preserved at Christchurch, along with another ex SAFE AIR aircraft displayed at either Blenheim or Nelson If that's 2 more BRISTOL FREIGHTER's than you folks have preserved up there .... then .... that really would surprise me Mark C AKL/NZ

Even more sad than W/O's .... "scrapping" is all too most commonly cause of the demise of vintage/classic aviation. I know the last B707-220 went that way years ago .... and I believe the original DC8 has also since "gone" that same way too .... with undoubtedly many more old/historic aircraft yet destined to follow their lead in the future .... FOR SURE ! As I've said a number of times in the past .... these aircraft are often worth more to someone else in "SCRAP" than most are willing or can afford to pay for and have them restored Only dedicated, motivated, and caring people .... and "A LOT" of $$$$ can ever stop this sort of thing becomming more common than it's already been over past years Mark C AKL/NZ

YEAH .... but .... only the aircraft undercover at the Christchurch museum, and the one displayed outside in either Blenheim or Nelson are "intact" .... and can be considered what I regard as "preserved" Gary The rest are either in bits scattered to the winds around the country .... or .... are falling bits and in absolutely apalling condition .... as I discovered was the case with yet an ex RNZAF BRISTOL FREIGHTER which has been sitting at Ardmore and which is currently being used for storage by DWEN AEROMOTIVE .... even though I believe it is the only BRISTOL FREIGHTER in New Zealand with airframe hours remaining. I understand the Christchurch museum aircraft is in beautiful condition, and the Blenhiem/Nelson displayed aircraft is in pretty good condition too. I further understand the Christchurch museum have also preserved the flightdeck of yet another BRISTOL FREIGHTER .... which is in apparently superb condition also. Mark C AKL/NZ
