CP AIR took delivery of its first DC10-30 (C-GCPC "Empress Of Quebec") on March 27th 1979.
The airline then acquired an additional 2 DC10's (C-GCPD "Empress Of British Colombia" and C-GCPE "Empress Of Alberta") later during 1979 .... and which was followed by a 4th during 1980 (C-GCPF "Empress Of Buenos Aires") .... then another 3 aircraft during 1981 (C-GCPG "Empress Of Fiji", C-GCPH "Empress Of Lima", and C-GCPI "Empress Of Honoloulu" .... an its 8th aircraft which was acquired 2nd-hand from SINGAPORE AIRLINES (C-GCPJ "Empress of Rome" ex 9V-SDC) during 1982.
Between December 1985 and October 1986 CP acquired additional an additional DC10's from PAKISTAN INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES (C-FCRA ex AP-AXC, C-FCRB "Empress of Tokyo" ex AP-AXD, C-FCRD ex AP-AYM, and C-FCRE "Empress of Canada" ex AP-BBL) .... to eventually comprise of a fleet of 12 DC10-30 aircraft.
Not all of CP AIR's aircraft were christened with traditional "EMPRESS" names .... and among the majority that did some were renamed during different stages of their service to the airline. During the late 1980's some of the airlines DC10's were also converted to heavier/longer ranging DC10-30ER (Extended Range) specification.
Between 1983 and 1987 CP AIR also leased 3 DC10-10's from UNITED AIR LINES (N1834U, N1836U, and N1837U) and which operated in the airlines definitive orange/red/natural metal livery of the period whilst also retaining their original US registrations .... and .... during the same period the airline leased 3 of its DC10-30's to UNITED AIR LINES (C-GCPF, C-GCPG, and C-GCPH) and which similarly operated in full/definitive mid 1980's era UNITED livery whilst also retaining their original Canadian registrations.
During 1986 CP AIR was rebranded "CANADIAN PACIFIC AIRLINES" .... and a new dark blue/red/metallic grey/cream livery introduced .... along with bi-lingual English and French fuselage titles (CANADIAN PACIFIC/CANADIEN PACIFIQUE) .... then the following year .... during 1987 .... the airline was sold to PACIFIC WESTERN AIRLINES and rebranded "CANADIAN AIRLINES INTERNATIONAL with a new variation of the same new colour scheme and a new logo being introduced .... with subtle treatment of the "CANADIAN" name which resolved the airlines name in favour of both English and French speaking regions of Canada.
CANADIAN AIRLINES INTERNATIONAL was taken over by AIR CANADA during 2000 .... and merged into the latter brand.
WARDAIR CANADA acquired 2 factory-fresh DC10-30's during 1978 .... the first of which (C-GXRB "W.R.Wop May") was delivered the airline on November 11th 1978 .... and became the first Canadian airline to operate DC10's.
During September 1981 the airline acquired a 3rd DC10-30 2nd-hand from SINGAPORE AIRLINES (C-GFHX "S.R.Stn MacMillan" ex 9V-SDA).
WARDAIR operated primarily charter type services throughout Canada and to overseas holiday destinations .... and which became scheduled servies from 1986.
An over-ambitious expansion program resulted in major financial difficulties from 1987 and the airline eventually being taken over by CANADIAN AIRLINES INTERNATIONAL during 1989.
Here's HJG's forthcomming (to be released) historical tribute to some of these aircraft .... and what might best be described as "THE CANADIAN COLLECTION" ....
