Montana Austria is a nearly forgotten airline. Its history was short but eventful: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montana_AustriaThe airline flew only 707s (138B and 396C) on long distances first for passengers and more and more for freight. One of the freight flights from Houston to South Africa with the 396C OE-IDA sealed the fate of the airline as US Costums seized the airplane full with arms. But rumors always existed that Costums did not know what the "spooks" were planing. So the crew was released quickly but the airplane was kept by UNCEL SAM and sold for 22.500 $ to the Airforce. But small wonder it was painted in government colours and FLEW AS AIRFORCE ONE (or TWO) with the Clintons onboard: For the pictures: www.austrianwings.info/2011/02/montana-austria-die-vergessene-airline/Seems even today she is flying now painted in grey for the US Airforce. If someday somebody wants to do a repaint, it would be nice, even as OE-IRA the smaller sister (138B) is already in the HJG hangar. Kind regards Walter

As I have written, that OE-IRA already is in the HJG "hangar" a repaint of the 396C OE-IDA seemed to me not so difficult ( ). So lets see and fly in the meantime with OE-IRA. Kind regards Walter P.S.: OE-IRA was sold to Egypt and flew under SU-FAB for Misr Overseas, then was sold to USA, the US Airforce and finaly to Boeing and was canibalized there.

Great informative article and photos from the Austrian Wings magazine. Thank you for sharing Walter. Years ago when I first heard of this airline, I always wondered why an Austrian airline would use this name, and then of course after some research, I found out that montana is actually derived from the Spanish word for mountains, which there are plenty of in Austria. Hi Herman: As the US state Montana once was part of the Spanish speaking Mexico, that name also has the same origin. Kind regards Walter I also like the Happy End for the execeptional pilot Hans-Jörg Stöckl, who was founder of MONTANA. After flying around Arab VIPS in 707s and 747s he finally was chief pilot for LAUDA AIR. For those who dont read German!
