Hi all,
first I would like to say: I've been enjoying the work of the Historic Jetliners Group for several years now - since 1999 I think... Flying those 707s and DC-8s is like a trip back in time. Just great!!!
Recently I have started to create retro-AI-traffic to go along with the classic HJG-Jets. Thanks to AI Aardvark (727/737/747), EvolveAI (DC-10) and Dee Waldron (707, DC-8, Caravelle etc.) there are many low-poly-models available.
The problem is the lack of real-retro-liveries to go with these models. For example I can't find AI-707-textures for following airlines: Air Mauritius, British Airways, British Caledonian, Cyprus Airways, Dan Air, Ethiopian Airlines, Kuwait Airways, Pakistan International, Sudan Airways, TAROM, Wardair Canada and many, many more.
I have heard of some people using HJG-aircraft in their AI-world - but this has a serious impact on framerates. How do you solve this problem? Has the Historic Jetliners Group ever thought of going into the AI-business?
Kind regards from Stuttgart/Germany
Michael

I don't know about HJG going into the AI business but I've heard of people using HJG birds as AI traffic. This is generally done on faster computers so that it doesn't kill your FPS. I know if I tried it on mine FS9 would probably crash. If you can't find certian liveries I'd suggest doing your own repaints, believe me it's time consuming but it's really a lot of fun. I've messed with AIA but not any of the other low-poly models that you've mentioned. I can highly recommend Project AI. They have some great models and the repaints that people have done are superb and match well with HJG birds, you just gotta do a little bit o' huntin' to find a particular airline. Personally I'm a bit frustrated with the fact that there are no RC-135 AI models out there. Sure there are KC-135's and 707's have repainted to look like RC's but it's just not the same. I've decided to tackle Gmax and build my own birds; I know it's gonna take years cause I'm new at modelling but I figured it will give me something to pass the time until Gary's RC-135's are finished.

HJG has no plans to get involved with AI traffic itself.
Our aircraft can be used as AI .... as I understand .... but only with a siginificant frame rate penalty.
We did recently approve a recent approach to us by someone wanting to do retro AI traffic for B707's .... but .... I've not seen any evidence to date of that project having been released publicly.
I'll let everyone know when I learn more about it .... for sure !

They can indeed be used for AI, although I'm afraid of a serious frame rate hit.
I agree that HJG aircraft are the best in their class and stripped down (lower poly) versions would be very well received as long as the existing texture files could be used.

Hi Guys. Quote from Marc C. "did recently approve a recent approach to us by someone wanting to do retro AI traffic for B707's .... but .... I've not seen any evidence to date of that project having been released publicly." I,m that man!!. Like most projects its worked on in spare time so is always in stop and go mode. Its a labour of love (and hate when it all goes wrong!) . Also it has been a one man job with some recent outside help with the flight model. Railrunner. To answer your main question about using the existing HJG textures, the answer is no. It was not designed to do that. It will use size reduced HJG on a lot of parts (thanks for the permission guys) , but the model and fuselage was never designed for this. See image below. I,m not sure how many sections the HJG fuselage is but I would guess five or six. The AI 707 has only two, all mapped on a 1024x768 texture for lower overheads. The more textures you have the more memory FS will use. It would cancel out a lot of the benefits of the low poly design. So far only LOD 1 has been completed, and that stands at 3699 polys as measured by ACM. I will try and get the bird finished ASAP, but no promises or date. Paul

Thanks Paul for taking a moment to fill everyone in. Like a good wine or cheese these things take time and patience to mature .... I know Mark C AKL/NZ

HJG alumni Dee Waldron has made an AI 707 and various AI DC-8s. Search Avsim for 'Dee Waldron AI 707' or 'Dee Waldron AI DC-8' and you'll find them.

Jim
