Today's flight is SR280, a multi-legged flight of Swissair from Europe to Johannesburg. This flight is from the Swissair 1971 schedule. The last leg of SR280 is Dar Es Salaam - Johannesburg and it departs on Sundays.
Today's aircraft is DC-8-62 HB-IDI. Currently scrapped. We have 98 passengers and 9.8 tonnes of cargo onboard bringing the payload to 20.1 tonnes. Estimated fuel burn is 15,230 kgs and adding reserves, total fuel comes to 26,230 kgs. Takeoff weight of 111,187 kgs. Engines started and the area is slightly smoky due to No3 running at high thrust to generate bleed air to start the remaining engines.
Takeoff from runway 05
Towards the Port of Dar Es Salaam
Climbing out amongst the clouds.
Flying over the Rufiji river in Tanzania
Approaching Beira VOR. Seen ahead is the port city of Beira, Mozambique and the Pungwe river meeting the Indian Ocean. I spent about 6 months on a ship anchored outside this port and so its kinda a deja vu feeling flying overhead . Still remember the bullet-hole ridden buildings at Beira and the wrong neighbourhoods we were in
Commenced descent. Made a mistake here as i will find out later i made the descent quite early
If there's one thing i remember from meteorology, its that grey coloured clouds are trouble.
Maneouvering for final approach
Approach. I'd like to believe there was a sandstorm.
Touchdown
That's it. It was a great flight. 3h40m flight time from gate to gate. Fuel consumption was 17728kgs. Much higher than expected due to having to cruise at lower altitude after the premature descent. The DC-8 handles well when flying by hand. I'd say i like it more than the 707. But hey, Douglas fan for life! Stay tuned for the next flight as i scour the schedules for something out of Joburg.
