I have a request but it's actually one I can do myself....with permission of course, Tony. I have been working doing bare metal textures for quite some time, I have several studies of the SGA 735 I've posted on flightsim.com (do a name search and you'll find them). I've been working with effects, mostly varying the shades of the main texture file to reflect varying colors of a metal skin. This not only includes what would be new panels but panels that have been subjected to dirt, oil and grime as well as weathering such as rain run-off. The subject would be a Douglas DC-8-73F and would be a stripped paint version ASTAR Air Cargo aircraft. Very slight remnants of the original livery would remain as a lighter shade of metal. Essentially what I want to work up to would be a generic bare metal DC-8-73F to fly for a VA project in the works for this fall. If this sounds fine I can start working on making the paint kit for it, I should be able to have it done within a week of the go-ahead from you guys. And of course, you would have first crack at the new textures for the HJG site.

Thanks Tony and Mark.
The actual aircraft will be an unmarked, bare metal version anyone could add their own VA markings to if they wish. I have made a plain white paint kit for the subject so far, I'll work on the alphas and main texture plates over the next couple of days to get the effect I'm looking for.
Essentially this is going to be a weathered, high cycle aircraft. it won't be too dirty but as with a low budget ad hoc cargo operator the owners would be more interested in how it flies than how it looks. As such expect fuselage residue and various shades of aluminum from replaced panels.
I may add VA markings to it later, right now it's just a bare metal concept.

Here is an early look. Basically I've done the bare metal and the weathering. I'm going to play with the alpha a little to tone down the shiny parts, especially on the lower fuselage. I went ahead and did the windows as a metal panel too, maybe I should have just had them as a white part but I can fix that in the alpha as well. ***inages were resized to 700X500, photobucket resized them to fit the page, sorry.***

OK, did a little more working with the beta in doing second level "tinting" of the skin and I think I got it tones down some. The other pics were on an overcast day in Texas, here's one from the bright sunshining state of California. Screen shots of natural metal aicraft don't do them justice (except in the case of my ERJ-170). But if anyone has a decent video card and wants a first hand look, I'm pretty much done with them as they are. PM me an e-mail address and I'll ship them out to you. I've run into two problems with the DC-8, for some reason it bleeds off airspeed very quickly when climbing above FL200, to the point of getting into a stall. Even after adjusting the climb to as low as 700 fpm it still wants to bleed off speed. The other is on landing, it does the same. I'm having to land a lot faster than I do with my 767-200PF at twice the weight. Could this be just having to deal with 1960's aerodynamics on my part?

I tested all our latest version DC8 panels and FDE quite thoroughly prior their release, but, never experienced any of the issues you mention above. If flying the early DC8's heavy then it might be advisable to stage climb .... but .... the others should not pose any problems whatsoever. I refer you to my "DC8 PANELS INSTALLATION - IMPORTANT NOTES" posting (appearing on all forum pages) .... apart from general installation instructions there are some basic handling notes included there which you might find helpful. Might pay you to print these off and study them Mark C AKL/NZ

Stage climbing will work I'm sure, I'm a "point it at the sky and floorboard it" sort of guy.

I play with FDE's from time to time, I have a SAAB 340B+ that will climb at 2,200 fpm and maintain 200 knots. I don't know what it'll do straight and level, I tend to back off about 0.70 mach. I have done 400 knot low level fly-bys and pulled 6 g's with it, we MP sometimes and I tend to outrun and out maneuver the F-16's trying to intercept me.

..only if you disable stress and crash failures. Years ago when AOL was the hotbed of virtual airlines I did an FDE for a turboprop Cessna 170. Now, that was a fun aircraft.
