That (these) are a "NICE SURPRISE" Peter I kind of regard the B720 as not on the odd-ball among the EAL fleet .... but .... something od "a rarety" too. I presume these aircraft must have supplemented the airlines DC8-20's on Latin American routes .... particular to high altitude destinations such as Bogota, Colombia. "MANY THANKS" Mark C AKL/NZ

Actually Mark, as i understand it, they very rarely left the US/Canada routes. They were used on "medium" hauls like BOS-ATL-MIA, YUL-IDL-BWI-ATL, IDL-MSY-DAL and so on.
When EA had 720s they had no real presence in Central and South America, only some routes into the Caribbean and Mexico. Though unlike United, Eastern did equip it's 720s with HF radios and rafts for overwater flying, and they did hit Bermuda frequently.

"INTERESTING" .... puts a slightly different slant on what I'd previously understood about EAL and their regional/international routings.

Alright... Due to appliance issues... this got delayed a bit... but finally had time tonight to get them going... so here's 2 to preview. N8708E in the titles variation of the prototype hockeysticks circa 1965 without door outlines: And N8714E in the later standard hockeystick circa 1970 with door outlines:

Looking really good, Peter. Can't wait to get my FS setup again at the new house and try out all the new additions.
As a historical aside, my father was a Second Officer on the DC-8 while EAL was phasing out the 720s. Apparently there was some time left on the leases, so EAL was trying to run the airplanes down and spare the DC-8s. My father stumbled across a DC-8 line of flying that was, for several months, always equipment-swapped with a 720. He spent six months sitting at home doing nothing, getting paid his guarantee. Not a bad deal!

Not a bad deal! Interesting to hear... I've had long chats with EA pilots on the 727, Electra, DC-9, 757, L1011 and even DC-10, but never found one that flew the 8s. If you have any other stories about those days from your father I'd love to hear them! I've never heard about running down the leases on the 720s and saving the DC-8s, but there were real differences in the 720 and DC-8 flying vs the schedule from 68 to 70 I do know... heard all kinds of explanations, so I'll add that one to EA was holding DC-8s in reserve for CAB filings to the Pacific Coast to there were parts issues on the DC-8-21s to management was trying to even out overhaul time in the JT4 engines... take your pick? Since the DC-8-21 and -51s (and even -60s) started being removed from the fleet right after the 720s (720 were done in summer 70, -21 done in Q3 72, -51 in Q4 71) I tend to think there was little point in keeping hours low on them though? But one fact I don't believe the 720s were leased, they were owned by EA and traded into Boeing on 727-200s.

According to my production records .... relating to just the 5 above-mentioned aircraft only .... the first 4 of these (N8703E, N8705E, N87807E, and N8712E) were each delivered to PRUDENTIAL between 1961 and 62 and least to EASTERN AIR LINES .... then .... bought by the airline between 1964 and 66. It seems (again according to my records) that N8714E was delivered to EASTERN AIR LINES during 1961, then, sold to BOEING during 1970, and to CONAIR during 1971. If you can "hit me" with a complete EAL B720 fleet list Peter, then, I'll be happy to share what my Bible states regarding each and in relation to its delivery to and disposal from EAL. Love the old/early EAL livery on these aircraft .... and their DC8's .... and propliners Mark C AKL/NZ

I've had long chats with EA pilots on the 727, Electra, DC-9, 757, L1011 and even DC-10, but never found one that flew the 8s. The Eastern DC-8 pilots actually lurk around aviation forums. Whenever I post on many countless aviation forums screenshots of Eastern DC-8s painted by you or Tony Madge, I always get nice comments from Eastern DC-8 pilots via PMs about how my screenshots remind them of their years flying on DC-8s. The Eastern pilots told me that the registration number of Eastern liveries in my screenshots match their Eastern pilot logbooks. Also I got nice comment on my screenshots from one forum member of another aviation forum who said his father was one of DC-8 test pilots. One Eastern DC-8-63PF pilot said to me that during training on that plane, when he made tight turn, he could look back at passenger seatings and could see the long aisle bending little bit. Anyway, what routes did Eastern 720s serve so that I can recreate using one of your new liveries: N8701E prototype hockeystick, the logotail, aka the puck tail? Your VA does not have 720s. Regards, Aharon

There are 103 720 flights in the Golden Falcon era? No there aren't any in Whisperliner era as that timetable is after the 720s were retired (can't have 747s, 720s and L1011s... no timetable covers them all, you can BARELY get 720 and 747 in 1970 summer, so I used 71 with some tweakers to get DC-8, 747, L1011 and dropped the 720 since it's in GF.) You can easily check questions like this at VEA Aharon...
