The "WOW" factor is in "Erik's work/textures" As for me .... well .... all I do is string a few words together in order to try'n make a sensible/logical sentence/paragraph or two that might hopefully educate people. But .... if it wasn't for Erik's textures (turning a full 360* here but not really going around in circles), then, I'd have "NOTHING" to write about .... SO .... "all credit goes to Erik and to whom is most deserving of all such accolades of appreciation". Still adding bits'n'pieces to the above historical text (it's not finished yet) .... since due to private commitments I wasn't able to complete everything in time for the actual date of the 66th DC-8 anniversary. A whole other aircraft subject also still needs being added to the above ensemble too. BUT .... Erik will deliver just as he does "all the time and every time" .... and once that's added, then, it'll be "RELEASE TIME" .... as I can then accommodate things into my typically rigorous daily SKED Mark C AKL/NZ

Thank so much Erik for all those wonderful liveries of the various DC-8 Models....and thank you Mark for the accompanying descriptions and historical events involved in the evolution of the DC-8 Family of aircraft. Herman

More to follow/be added yet.
"That particular history" (featured within PP3 of this thread) is a composite production based on my 2 (3X considering one's in 2 separate parts) earlier DC-8 development presentations .... BUT .... updated with more current information and a number of additional facts added too and which aren't related within either of my original 2 (3X) presentations.
Needed "this particular compilation" to support Erik's recently previewed DC-8 textures (given these subjects each represent "the first of their line" and in DOUGLAS period house livery) .... and which had been planned for a while previously. It's often not enough to simply present imagery relating to new textures and with brief descriptive text only. Some subjects (like these) require something "more substantial". The DC-8's recently celebrated 66th anniversary provided an opportunity to do this (I feel), so, I tried to exploit that accordingly. Just a simple case of "knowing an aircraft type reasonably intimately and its history" too.
Trying to ready the last installment of this "current" compilation (which will later be "titled" and transferred to the history page .... or to another locality of my choosing). This last installment requires "A LOT" of research/study though .... and which I'm still attending to as time permits. Again .... just couldn't finish everything in time for the DC-8's B/day.

The last DC-8 texture preview (for the time being) has just been added to the above featured 66th anniversary celebration article .... (located on PP3 of this thread). Rather than presenting this subject separately it too's been included as part of the (PP3) celebratory article .... to appears alongside each of the other 5 "NEW" and "UPGRADED" textures presented within this forum feature given all 6 texture subjects relate to either "the first of the line" or other 1960's period DOUGLAS "marketing promotions" for the DC-8. This latest texture represents DC-8-53 N9608Z .... as it appeared during 1962 (in basic PHILIPPINE AIRLINES period livery) when it was used by DOUGLAS in a sales and marketing oriented campaign to promote the DC-8-50 .... and for which this aircraft was named "PACIFIC PACER". and also supported a "DOUGLAS DC-8 SERIES 50 - WORLDS FASTEST LONG RANGE JET" legend on its tail fin. Between February 20th and 23rd 1962 this aircraft flew Seattle/Tokyo direct with a 41,000lb payload, then Tokyo/Miami direct, over a distance of some 8,702nm in 13hrs 52mins .... in aid of this DOUGLAS promotion. Upon arrival at Miami some 10,000lbs of fuel remained aboard the aircraft. This particular aircraft was originally built for PHILIPPINE AIRLINES but placed into storage upon its completion, sold to KLM (PH-DCP) on April 27th 1962, then leased to PHILIPPINE AIRLINES (PI-C801 named "Sampaguita" .... later re-registered RP-C801 during 1974). It was operated by the airline until July 7th 1986 and sold to NAVAERO CORPORATION, then scrapped during 1987. This latest subject is an "UPGRADE" of our existing "DC-8-53 DOUGLAS AIRCRAFT COMPANY 1962 N9608Z". texture. Once again (and as earlier communicated in relation to both similarly upgraded DOUGLAS DC-8-10 SHIP ONE 1958 N8008D and DOUGLAS DC-8-50 SHIP ONE 1960 N8008D textures .... also by Erik and similarly included within the same PP3 article), our original DOUGLAS "PACIFIC PACER texture was also produced during 2001/2 and really showing its age. This new/upgraded "PACIFIC PACER" texture is both "a lot more accurate" than its original file and also appears "much more crisp" too .... as may be evidenced per its preview images within the PP3 located celebratory presentation .... which incidentally has also just been further expanded (completed now) with its final supporting text having been added. Just couldn't pull it all together for the actual day unfortunately due to a string of private engagements. These, and other texture subjects previewed since our April releases, will be publicly accessible here "SOON" .... as part of our next and "modestly sized" release. "THANKS" Erik .... nice work as always Mark C AKL/NZ

Time for "ONE MORE" .... This'll likely be the last texture I preview .... prior to everything accumulated, since our April release, soon becoming publicly available. This's another DOUGLAS "house livery" subject. "NO" .... it's "NOT" SHIP ONE 1958 N8008D. In fact it's "DC-8 SHIP TWO 1960" N8018D .... and which was later delivered to UNITED AIRLINES as N8001U. It's livery might appear similar to that of SHIP ONE 1958, but, that's where the similarities both start and finish in respect of this particular aircraft subject. This texture uses a different 3D model, panel, and FDE. It's performance will be/"IS" superior to that of DC-8 SHIP ONE 1960 (P&W JT3C turbojet engines/test configuration weights) and both DC-8-11 and -12 too (P&W JT3C-6 turbojet engines represented with both original and modified weights respectively) too. Unlike SHIP ONE; SHIP TWO was (eventually) powered by higher thrust P&W JT4A turbojets engines prior to being delivery to UNITED AIR LINES .... as a "DC-8-20" .... certified for higher weights again than either the DC-8-11 and -12. In short/other words this one's "different" .... and also "another historic aircraft from the early DOUGLAS test/DC-8 certification flight line" .... to join Erik's "UPGRADED" DC-8 SHIP ONE 1958 and 1960 textures, along with those for his "NEW" DC-8 SUPER 61, SUPER 62, and SUPER 63 subjects which also each support DOUGLAS house colours as featured among the PP3 previews within this thread. A little about DC-8 SHIP TWO ....On May 14th 1959 DC-8 "SHIP TWO" (N8018D) was performing tests, at Edwards AFB, in order to ascertain the maximum safe landing sink rate for DC-8 aircraft .... and which suddenly revealed a potential structural weakness within the DC-8 fuselage. The aircraft (under the command of DOUGLAS test pilot Heimie HEIMERDINGER .... and with DOUGLAS FAA test pilot Joe TYMCZYSZYN accompanied by FE Bill BRYDE) impacted the RWY "hard" .... resulting in a fractured keel beam and the aircrafts entire rear fuselage section snapping and folding down around its aft wing spar to make ground contact .... as well as the #1 engine nacelle also separating from its wing pylon too. PHOTO:Terry WADDINGTONThis particular incident was non-fatal and the aircraft was repaired then returned to service/the DOUGLAS test flight line. Following this incident all production DC-8's were consequently strengthened pre-delivery. During August 1960 "SHIP TWO" was converted to a DC-8-21 and delivered to UNITED AIR LINES (N8001U named "Mainliner Warren Burke") on November 1st 1960. It remained in service with airline until January 23rd 1978 when it was withdrawn from service and scrapped. Mark C AKL/NZ

Thanks everybody! There were definitely some challenges associated with painting those DC-8s, but I'm glad the end results are going over well! Now for something completely different...up until the mid-2000s or so, it wasn't uncommon for major league sports teams in the US to have their own aircraft for travel to away games (or at the very least, one provided by their wealthy owners). Somewhat fittingly, the Seattle SuperSonics of the NBA were no exception, and used this former Royal Air Maroc 727-200 between 1998 and 2001. At that point, it was sold to the original incarnation of the Charlotte Hornets, and followed them in their move to New Orleans before being retired. Since 2016, all NBA teams have been flown on Delta 757s (technically all owned by the league itself) in a 72-seat configuration. Some teams do persist in owning their own planes, most notably the New England Patriots (2 ex-American 767s) and the Arizona Cardinals (6 ex-Delta 777s) of the NFL.

"THANKS" Erik .... it's the unusual and unanticipated which tends to make HJG what it "IS" .... especially considering we/HJG are an FS website dedicated to aviation/airline/operator history "FIRST AND FOREMOST" Mark C AKL/NZ

Erik's got some "GREAT LOOKING EW" stuff too. First up comes from the US Pacific NE "EMERALD CITY/JET CITY/RAIN CITY/TRANSPLANT CITY" (or whatever one cares to call it other than Seattle ) .... in the form of the following B727-200 ADV and which was the official interstate transport of the famed SEATTLE SUPERSONICS" (or "SONICS") basket ball team back in the 1990's .... SEATTLE SUPERSONICS B727-2B6 ADV N119GA (1999)And last, but by no means least, and from NIPPON/NIHON/JAIPANGU/THE LAND OF THE RISING SUN (or plainly Japan) comes the following Pocket-Rocket as the first of our anticipated ZENNIKKU/ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS liveries .... this one featuring the airlines "Mohican" scheme which graced it's entire fleet from 1969 until 1989 .... ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS B737-281 JA8409 (1974)"NICE WORK" also Erik Mark C AKL/NZ

Here's the first texture productions for our new soon to be debut released (among other similar expansions of our military C-135 line) Short Tail KC-135A models .... both featuring mid 1950's era USAF liveries as follows .... KC-135A (early production) BOEING/USAF (demonstrator/SHIP ONE) "City Of Renton" # 55-3118 (1956) KC-135A (early production) USAF 93rd Bombardment Wing # 55-3141 (1957)Both of these textures are supported by different 3D models. The 1956 texture model features the early type P&W J57 turbojet engines without the nacelle interior bullet feature .... whilst the 1957 texture model features the later type P&W J57 turbojet engines with the nacelle interior bullet common to all production KC-135A aircraft by the late 1950's and which remained with these aircraft into the 1980's. On a "technical note": One (certainly the observant among this community) should observe neither of these 2 aircraft subjects feature the rear fuselage stiffening bands .... evident among our other later livery and version C-135's. "According to our research" .... this feature didn't begin to be applied to these aircraft until the very late 1960's/early 1970's. "WELL DONE" Erik Mark C AKL/NZ

Excellent work as always. Great attention to detail on both. Believe that 55-3118 is the "gate guard" at McConnell AFB (Wichita KS) - not in the depicted livery, but later "White" livery from later in its service career, so still "extant", despite its age. Looking forward to the release!
