That fabled Johnny Horton song "North to Alaska" playing in the background as we head for Anchorage in our new 720-062 N720W circa 1962. These planes and their crews were regarded as heroes after the devastating "Good Friday" 9.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Alaska in 1964. PNA had these planes flying relief missions up to Anchorage and bringing the injured back to Seattle. {The quake itself lasted 10 minutes, then came the tsunamis! Valdez and various points along Prince William Sound were hit with tsunamis over 30 meters in height! Valdez was flattened completely, the Anchorage area was devastated, with an entire neighborhood called "Turnagain Heights" having the ground essentially turn into putty, {"soil liquefaction"} tearing the entire area upside down and backwards..resulting in a massive wasteland. It still exists today as "Earthquake Park" in memory of this catastrophe.} Much more work on this is underway, these are the very first shots of her in the sim and it's going to be fun! I have to tidy up the red paint on the tail-fuselage area, get the Alaska Flag logo worked up for the upper tail, then carry all of this over to the right side. Am also going to do her sister-ship N720V with black or dark blue outlined doors circa 1967 right before the Western merger. BTW.. Here's a really neat YouTube video of Alaska history with that great Johnny Horton song playing in the background: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks9LdQsigOMCheers! John

Thanks Guys! Here's a few more of her right now. Still only with the left side done, tidying up the tail-fuselage livery area and underneath in the back in the blue. Take a look at the new Alaska flag up on the tail now...THANKS to Mark for that scan he sent over! This one is getting real close, just a few more things to change like the wings without exit markings on them..then I can get the right side done, then off to Mark.. Enjoy John

Thanks again Guys! Well, the big moment is finally here. The rollout colors for the Pacific Northern Boeing 720 have been completed and she's now on her shakedown in full paint. Had to make some adjustments to the fuselage Pacific Northern and tail PNA text {the fuselage textures were a few window lengths too short and the letter P needed editing on the fuselage and tail. This part drove me a bit bananas trying to get right. I didn't realize the left side lettering on the fuselage was set over window 3, the first two had been closed off. Duh!}. Also edited the tail flag a bit more, softening it up and making it look more "North Star-Big Dipper flag-like" from the resources I have. New wing textures sans-exit outlines added as well. I really like her. Took around 7 hours to get this one finished tonight but it was well worth it. This one is AIRBORNE to Mark in New Zealand very soon... ;D Regards John

Thanks again Guys! Well, I sat down tonight and figured, I might as well do all three of the PNA birdies in each of their unique schemes. Tonight I knocked out N720V, seen in her 1967 era livery right before PNA's merger with Western Airlines featuring the newly mandated door and exit outlines after a series of bad accidents worldwide involving aircraft fires with fire/crash and recovery crews not being able to locate the aircraft exits thanks to no markings for them in the clear. {I'd love to get this one a tad bit dirtier as one of the two rare photos I have of her show her at KSEA in a rather nasty looking paint job, but I also have one of this same ship in quite splendid clean livery as seen here. So..we'll go with that one for now.} Okay, here she is well settled into cruise, lunch is being served just east of the mighty Cascades just passing south of Redmond, Oregon headed for LAX on a shakedown run. The main differences with this livery versus the delivery scheme being the door and overwing exit outlines, an all grey radome cap. Re-done registration numbers more accurately. {--I also re-drew the rear fuselage cheatline areas on both the delivery scheme N720W and this one N720V to be much more accurate and smoother looking after comparing port/starboard side photos versus what I had on the PSD's. -- The cheatline you see on this one is now on the Delivery Scheme ship previously shown. It looks much better!} Next one is going to be the real RADICAL Birdie of the very small 3 ship 'litter' of 720s PNA had.. I'll keep that a surprise until it's ready.. ;D Regards to all! John

This is nice stuff John .... and I look forward to the "OTHER SURPRISE" !
Actually .... we perhaps should have run another "SPOT THE DIFFERENCE" mini-contest with these liveries too !
I think I've got left over a few tiny packets of AMERICAN AIRLINES pretzels (probably quite stale by now), along with some HJG Teddy Bears for prizes ;D

Hehehehe
I could add in some stale 2 year old Vietnam Airlines towelettes from my 9 day holiday all over Vietnam back in 2005 to that "gift pack".. I found a whole bunch of these Vietnam Airlines towelettes the other day while cleaning out one of my storage boxes here! I also found a folded up Vietnam Airlines snack-box from one of the A320/767 flights we took from Saigon-Hanoi-Danang-Saigon-Taipei. It says "Have A Good Appetite" on it. {Grin} I couldnt complain about their service though, they had little snack-boxes with Vietnamese "bus station sandwiches" in them using mini-French rolls stuffed with 'pate, onion, lettuce and cucumber. The FA's would walk around and offer seconds on these too. Was rather filling for a short flight and far better than anything I've seen flying domestic back in the States.
{You can't miss the BIG version of these addictive sandwiches sold on almost every street corner in Saigon..just watch out for the hot chiles they'll slice up and stack into them..WHEW DOGGIES!!! Vietnamese Chili peppers are MURDER!..with or without those in one of these "bus station sandwiches", they're fantastic washed down with a big bottle of Green or Red Bottle Saigon Beer!}
