I can see precisely what you mean Herman From our standpoint .... I guess we/HJG assume most folk have sufficient basic FS knowledge to know that those characters "(dot) CFG" aren't intended to be added to the CFG file per that recommended edit. I guess even the best written and clearest of instructions can always be misinterpreted by those with perhaps lesser FS knowledge. As I implied on the FSX forum yesterday too .... this particular issue was in fact so basic .... that even I failed to grasp/recognise it as the potential cause of the problem. I'm only glad though that, with your help, "WHIRLWIND" is now finally able to enjoy these great virtual aircraft I think we .... whom endeavour to troubleshoot such issues .... willnow all be more aware of the potential for this particular misunderstanding in the future ;D Mark C AKL/NZ

Hi Herman, I do understand your issue perfectly, and as I can see from your excellent shot, you are one of those "blessed" so the file-extensions are hidden. Basically since old DOS-days, file names consisted of a "surname" and a "last-name" e.g. Myfile.txt which is clearly a txt-file as you can see from the extension or "last-name" The first file names had a limit of 8 characters for the file name and 3 for the extension .... Later on there came an extension so file names could be even longer but extensions still remained 3 long ....such a file could be: "This is my file.txt" which in DOS showed up as THIS~.txt But in Windows it showed perfectly..... Later on again, Microsoft decided that layman would only be confused if they saw the file extensions, so they decided to hide those from the user per default, so the above mentioned file would show as MyFile instead of MyFile.txt (but they still show up correctly in a DOS-prompt ...) But the ability to actual see the file extensions (which in my view is a good thing) is just a matter of a setting in Windows: XP = In any Explorer window, you can right-click and select Folder Options - View, and then unselect "Hide extensions for known file types" The same goes for VISTA/WIN7: windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Show-or-hide-file-name-extensionsSo we are both right, isn't life great

OK, thank you gentlemen for your response and explanations.
So we can assume that all will remain "status quo"?
Cheers; Herman

I think so, as the instructions aren't wrong, maybe a suggestion of enabling showing the actual file names inclusive extensions, but apart from that they are in fact quite accurate

Hi When you write any thing be it instructions or give directions the writer fully understands what he has written ,some people will miss interpret this which is quite normal During my time in the aircraft/airline industry i was called upon to write maintenance and operational procedures and i under stood every word i had written Fortunately there is a very strict method to verify the correctness and accuracy of these documents . i remember the first procedure i wrote came back from proof reading covered in comments in red from cover to cover. After many checks and independent checks the final check is to use the procedure for real and see if it is OK , during the life of any procedure it is subject to amendments as required The instructions in HJG need to be as accurate as possible as not every body is a IT boffin or like me IT/PC challenged Subject the written instructions for loading any of the HJG to this process IE the renaming of file etc the download instructions will turn up quite a few anomalies In our office we had a large slogan on the wall KISS some will know it means : Keep It Simple Stupid !! This i hope all this is taken as a constructive comment because i think all you guys that make your efforts available to us less gifted mortals do a fantastic job keep it and thanks a million This is my last comment about loading the DC9-50 My next problem is with one or two panels buts that's some one Else's problem Whirlwind

What appears to be the Panel problem .... to which you refer to there "WHIRLWIND" ?
Maybe start a new thread on this .... rather than add more to this particular thread.

Hi
As I said in my last mail I cleaned out my PC of any thing related to FS9 which was quite a time consuming task as there were files all over the place Quite a few where they should not have been due to my inexperience. So I started from scratch with a clean PC. Every thing went well; I down loaded an example of all the aircraft in HJG plus many more from other web sites, not a single problem and my frame rates have improved Then I down loaded the DC9 again!! The Dc-9-50 with the JT8d-15 and I still have problems the only one out of dozens of down loads
I will run through the process I use In my documents folder I open a folder named civil airliner down loads and create four files DC-9 -50, DC-9-50 Textures, Dc9 core, and DC9-50 panel
Dc-9-50 I down load this file into the allotted file, I open it and delete the sub folder FSX cfg file closed it and copy and past into the FS2004 Aircraft file I ignore your instructions they don’t work!
Dc-9-50 textures Load up as per instructions no problems
As a check I boot up FS9, the DC-9-50 is there with the texture I loaded with of course the default panel, it flies ok and does every thing it should do as you would expect But I want a more realistic panel so first I down load the core files and start to load into FS9 1 sub folder gauges no problem load as instructed
2 sub folder Sound no problems load as instructed
3 I thought I had done this correctly
But I got what you call harmless warnings but if I try to load the Dc-9-50 FS9 crashes!! The DC-9-50 does not fly if you click YES or CONTINUE
When you say locate the FS9 .CFG file to edit it where is it? Do you mean the cfg file in DC-9-50? Once I know where it is I don’t have a problem.
3B When you say install the GAUGESOUND.DDL inside the FS9 folder I assume you just cut and past straight into FS9
DC-9-50 Panel for Jt8d-15
I don’t know about the panel I loaded as per the instruction but until I can sort out the core load problems I have not seen the panel due to FS9 crashing
Why I have trouble with the DC-9 and not the other download lord knows I have been trying all week to sort this out I think my old brain has got into a loop!!
Regards
Richard Woodard

If you're going to ignore our instructions .... then that's likely why you're experiencing problems Those instructions are written .... and in particular written the way they are .... for a reason .... and they do work or they wouldn't have been written. Since it seems to be the panel that´s causing you problems I'll endeavour to explain the installation procedure for these, and their CORE FILES, once again .... as follows. In the case of the DC9-50 there are 2 panel options as follows .... DC9-50 JT8D-15 DC9-50 JT8D-17 The above 2 panel options are intended for use with the following respective DC9-50 aircraft base packs DC9-50 JT8D-15 DC9-50 JT8D-17 Each DC9 panel download contains a sub/containing folder which contains the actual DC9 panel folder to be installed. In the case of the 2 DC9-50 panel options these folders are named as follows .... panel.dc-9-50_jt8d-15 panel.dc-9-50_jt8d-17 These (above) are the folders which should be installed inside your FS9 "FSFSCONV" folder .... with the names of these folders then being edited to the PANEL.CFG file contained inside the default PANEL folder inside your DC9-50 aircraft base pack folders. The DC9 PANEL CORE FILES are a separate and essential ingredient of each of the DC9 panels we offer .... without it these panels can't/won't function at all .... so .... correct installation of both this file and each of the panels is imperative if problems are to be avoided. The DC9 PANEL CORE FILES folder contains the following 3 sub folders of essential ingredients .... GAUGES MODULES SOUNDS The "GAUGES" folder contains some 61 individual gauges files .... all of which must be installed inside the FS9 "GAUGES" folder. The "MODULES" folder contains the following 2 files .... FSSound.dll GaugeSound.dll The FSSOUND.DLL file (only) must be installed inside the FS9 "MODULES" folder .... and then the FS9.CFG file (not the AIRCRAFT.CFG file) must be located and edited precisely as follows .... [OLDMODULES] FSSound.dll=1 Save this edit. Copying & pasting this edit (to avoid errors) is recommended. The GAUGESOUND.DLL must be installed inside the "FLIGHT SIMULATOR 9" folder. The "SOUNDS" folder contains some 65 individual WAV files which must be installed inside the FS9 "SOUND" folder .... not the Sound folder inside your aircraft base pack. All of these very simple procedures must be followed precisely as stated per the recommended installation instructions which accompany each downloadable file .... OR .... problems/diappointements/frustrsations WILL be experienced. PLEASE .... follow the instructions ! Mark C BOG/CO
