"NICE SURPRISE" to awake to Peter Saw, and photographed, this one (the -200QC demonstrator) at AKL many times between 1989 and 1999 .... supporting both it's BAe demonstrator livery as well as both variations of ZQ livery .... and with both its original British later NZ registrations too. This aircraft was originally ordered by PRESIDENTIAL AIRWAYS, but, the order then lapsed after that airline entered bankruptcy during 1989. It entered the British civil air register as G-BPBT on September 28th 1988 .... as a standard -200 Series aircraft .... then .... it was modified to a "convertible" configuration (with a port side aft fuselage main deck cargo door) during 1989 and operated by BRITISH AEROSPACE as their demonstrator for the type. It was leased to ANSETT AUSTRALIA .... for sublease to ANSETT NEW ZEALAND from October 1989 .... and evaluated for 6 months, by ANSETT NEW ZEALAND and with whom it initially operated in a hybrid livery composed of the blue and orange BRITISH AEROSPACE striping and "OC" tail logo and with "ANSETT NEW ZEALAND" fuselage titles whilst also still supporting its British registration. ANSETT NEW ZEALAND used this aircraft to compete with AIR NEW ZEALAND (whom operated a B737-200QC .... ZK-NQC) on overnight domestic cargo services. These aircraft, of both operators, flew PAX by day and domestic air freight during the evening. ANSETT NEW ZEALAND's BAe 146's had the slight advantage of being more environmentally friendly/welcome than the AIR NW ZEALAND's B737-200's .... in respect of their being able to more than adequately comply with noise restrictions .... but .... the B737-200 was "superior" in terms of both it speed and freight capacity. ANSETT NEW ZEALAND then formally acquired this aircraft on January 24th 1990 .... and at which time it was then re-registered ZK-NZC (and named "City Of Manukau") and supported the definitive late 1980's to mid 1990's era ANSETT NEW ZEALAND livery. This aircraft remained in service with ANSETT NEW ZEALAND until July 11th 1999 .... in fact it was the only BAe 146-200 to remain in service with the airline (due to its cargo capability) after it's sister-ships ZK-NZA and -NZB (both standard -200 SERIES aircraft) were replaced with -300's .... and it was also the only BAe 146-200 to support the mid 1990's introduced and final version ANSETT/NEW ZEALAND livery featuring a blue tail with the yellow "A" logo and Southern Cross stars along with revised fuselage titles. Upon it's withdrawal from ANSETT NW ZEALAND service .... the intended sale of this aircraft to CITY JET failed to eventuate and it was then stored at CHC. It was eventually sold to TITAN AIRWAYS (G-ZAPN) during September 1999 .... and with whom it operated ad-hoc type charters for other operators .... among which were AUGSBURG AIRWAYS from March 2000 .... and CITYFLYER EXPRESS from August until December of 2002. This aircraft was damaged at MAN (in the UK .... high winds caused an unsecured ground stair unit to impact the aircraft), but, it was repaired and returned to service during January 2003. It was then sold to SKYFORCE AVIATION during May 2013 (VH-SIF) .... and sold to WESTPAC BANKING CORPORATION during July 2013 .... then leased to PIONAIR AUSTRALIA and with whom this particular aircraft currently remains. OH WOW .... what another nice surprise to awake to. I'm sure some on continental New Zealand will appreciate these .... as will other on the little West Island too. "NICELY DONE"Peter .... would you perhaps be interested in representing -200QC ZK-NZC in the final ANSETT NEW ZEALAND scheme too .... www.flickr.com/photos/pslg05896/43784620741It was not only the last BAe 146-200 to remain in service with ANSETT NEW ZEALAND but also the only -200 that ever supported this final livery prior to the ANSETT collapse.
